Hey Everyone,

As some may have noticed, but then again maybe not Smile , I have been away from Guild Wars for quite some time. It was not a choice, but rather that my computer was stolen. Well, really 3 computers, xbox360, Wii, HDTV, and other various small items were stolen from my wife and I when our apartment was broken into in January. The saddest part was that we didn't have renters insurance. Our school, which is where our apartment was, was gracious enough to replace one of our computers and bought us a new macbook, which was one of the three computers that was stolen. This, however, posed a problem with my Guild Wars playing as I no longer owned a PC.

Well, the reason I am writing this is that I am looking at getting another computer now, to replace one of our PC computers. I am looking for a decent gaming computer but I am kind of in a tight budget. Any suggestions on some places to look (store or site) that have decent computers for decent prices? I have no OS disks or anything anymore so I would like to get a complete system. I am looking forward to Guild Wars 2 and Diablo 3 as future games to play. Any suggestions would be awesome!

Very Happy

Thanks everyone!

I've played GW on a Macbook via Boot Camp on several occasions. A basic Intel Macbook, not a Pro or anything. It won't play as well as a hard core gamer machine, but it will definitely get you up and going again.

That's your cheapest solution.

Welcome back!

I don't believe anything has been published as far as requirements for GW2, but wouldn't expect there to be at this point.

I don't have a gaming PC, just a decent off the shelf computer with an upgraded video card and it works fine for GW. It is getting a bit old and in need of replacement, but that won't happen until we're done with the whole two-kids-in-college-thing.

Same here on the PC. Mine used to be my development machine until the tools outpaced the capabilities of the computer.

I won't upgrade it until the requirements for GW2 are published. Then I'll probably just upgrade the components.

I'm not a good example of a player using a more cost effective system, since I typically run GW on a custom built gaming machine. However, I have run GW numerous times on a 3 year old middle of the road PC laptop (one of the few offered with a stand alone video card) and it has worked just fine. Based on that experience and my discussions with other GW players, I'd say that most systems purchased in the past 3 years or so will run GW effectively. For buying a new system, my recommendation would be to make sure that it has a stand alone video card (rather than "integrated" or "shared" memory, which as I understand it, uses a portion of your RAM to replicate a video card). On top of that, my core focus is on the basics: RAM and processor capabilities.

On another note, I'd recommend trying to make sure that you get a PC that has a relatively open architecture, so that if something breaks or you want to upgrade something, you are less likely to be tied in to buying such hardware from the computer's manufacturer. This is one of multiple reasons I have stayed away from Dells (not even mentioning their less than "stellar" ratings: Customer Experience Index: Dell: Poor and very poor ||| Dell Customer Service Ratings). Of course, there are some that have had positive experiences with Dells, and my rant is not meant to overlook the potential for a good experience with them.

As to whether today's entry level computers will run GW2, that's anyone's guess, but my presumption is yes. ANet is in the business of selling games, and in that regard they want to sell GW2 to the largest customer base they can, while still enabling the game to have decent features. IMO, ANet will work to ensure that the majority of people who have purchased computers within 3 years of the game release are able to run the game. If these presumptions are correct, you should be fine once GW2 is released.

NOTE: Moved to Tech Support sub-forum, since this is mainly focused on such issues. JET

Like Jet, my primary machine is a high end, although mine is a home built. However, I also run it on my two previous high end machines, now several years old, my primary internet machine (done mostly as a budget machine I could keep in a hallway upstairs), and my laptop (does have a stand alone video card, but that's not very expensive anymore). All of them run GW just fine, I would suspect any midrange capability machine would run GW2, also. I don't think they will make it so system demanding it would preclude some of their sales base. My suggestion is build your own (not really hard, and that way you don't have any extra software you don't really want or need). The guides I normally use are at AnandTech, ArsTechniqia (sp?), and Tom's Hardware. Just google (or Bing) them, look for the guides section and check the budget and mid range guides. Then tailor what you want based on that. My general principle is spend any extra money you have on the video card, second choice RAM, third choice the processor, distant fourth sound. Mostly you're in luck right now. RAM remains cheap, move to one generation lower in video cards, and AMD just moved in some very credible processors (not up to the very high end Intels, but waaaaaaay lower in price, much better bang for the bucks).

Check gizmodo.com "Gadget Deals of the Day", which updates weekdays around 2 pm Central (not sure what the time difference is for you non clock-setting Arizonans). While you wait for a good model to show up, you can gather a bucketful of free granola bars, mp3s, magazines, etc (if you're into that).
